For over a year now, I’ve been working quarterly with Providence’s Indigenous Wellness and Reconciliation team at St. Paul’s Hospital, providing visual support for their in-person meetings with past and present Indigenous patients. We meet patients in-person, and they generously tell their experiences of accessing health care at St. Paul’s (or any of Providence’s other Metro Vancouver facilities), and together we create a visual map of their story. These sessions are incredibly powerful, and begin with a lot of trust and relationship-building. Being in-person means that we can talk together, and make sure that what is being drawn represents exactly what the patient wants it to. Stories will cover everything: the good and the bad. The amazing part of this work is that patient’s suggestions are directly making changes and impact in the new St. Paul’s Hospital that is currently being built.
